February 7, 2025

Lien completed the 40-hour training and received the Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) certification. Open Sky Community Services operates this in partnership with the Worcester Police Department and the Department of Mental Health. The training provides information, resources, and a better understanding to first responders on how to respond in the field to a variety of individuals and scenarios, including mental illness, substance use, hoarding, the elderly, veterans, LGBQT, homeless, TBI, autism, etc., with also an emphasis on self-care.

Listen as Brian sits down and talks with Ready, Set, Share podcast host Beverley Danielle on his continued journey to seek mental health wellness and his mission to help others be able to ask for help and find the help needed.  

October 17, 2024

Lien organized a comedy show to benefit the VFW Post in Oxford, MA. The VFW auxilary was able to use money raised that night to help fill the veteran’s food pantry, purchase holiday meals for veterans in need, and assist with the Adopt-A-Soldier program. The night was made possible by not just the wonderful audience but by the VFW and the comedians of the night who donated their time to make this night happen.

May 9, 2024

May 9 brought the community together for an event in recognition of May Mental Health Awareness Month organized by Lien. A panel discussion was completed around the topic of resiliency and wellness for first responders and human service workers. 20 plus vendors joined the night to provide resources. This night was made possible through the donation of time, food, space, etc of community members.

Lien was featured on Steven Bisson’s podcast, Finding Your Way Through Therapy. Different topics from mental health in the the workplace, in the Asian culture, and what we can do to stop the stigma were reviewed as well as a discussion of the May 9 Mental Heath Awareness event.

October 3, 2024

Brian Harkins participated in a documentary released in 2023 highlighting the mental health crisis in the first responder community.  First responders make up less than 2% of the population, but account for nearly 20% of the suicides. This documentary looks at the mental health struggles of firefighters, police officers and EMTs, through the lens of a small town in New England.

On August 23, 2023,  Brian chatted on the Finding Your Way Through Therapy Podcast with host Steve Bisson and Sergeant Jay Ball of the Framingham Police Department of the challenges in the first responder world and the stigma surrounding mental health

On Steve Bisson’s podcast “Finding Your way Through Therapy, Brian joined EMT Firefighter Eric Knox to discuss the isolation of the job from trauma, risks, etc and what is needed to provide support to firefighters in need.

The community came together on May 16, 2023 in recognition of May Mental Health Awareness Month. This event, organized by Lien, was made possible through the donation and the presence of the community who came together to support and make there voices heard about the importance of talking about mental health.
